The Miniature Horse Tack and Pony Tack Guide will help you find answers to many of your questions. We have sold Horses, supplies, tack and equipment for many years. Way before the Internet became available. Once we had the Internet at our disposal, we began selling tack on eBay and another website called Tack 4 Horse and Pony.

You should know what you need and what size you need before you buy your tack. The Tack Guide will give you a better understanding of the different types, sizes and uses of saddles, bridles, harness, tack and other equipment available for your Miniature Horse or Pony or Horse.
This photo of momma and baby was taken just a few hours after little Buzz entered the world. The photo above is a picture of a one year old Buzz. I couldn't resist sharing these photos with you.
I am always amazed at how fast these little guys grow up. Buzz is full grown now and stands under 30". We have a number of these little guys. Just like a potato chip... you can't have just one. They seem to multiply. After all, what's one more?

Most Saddlery and Tack stores cater to the full size horse and what I call accessories. Accessories are leads, brushes, combs, buckets and so forth. You might find some items for the Pony and a few items for the Miniature Horse.
You will rarely see a complete assortment of tack and equipment for the Small Pony or Mini Horse in one location. When you do find some items, they are usually targeting the show horse and you may fall over from sticker shock. I know I have.
Miniature horses and small ponies grow more popular everyday. Most people purchase their Mini for pleasure and for their children. Many older adults who are no longer able to ride horses like they did when they were younger have turned to the Miniature Horse. These adults have discovered the joy of owning and driving the Mini.
Some Miniature Horse owners love to participate in shows. The classes in these specialty shows are as much fun to watch as they are to participate in. The driving classes are beautiful. The costume classes and the obstacle course classes are just plain fun to watch. You can count on being delightfully entertained.
Not everyone is attracted to the show ring. Some folks just love to keep these little guys around for fun, entertainment and companions.
Where Can You Find Miniature Horse and Pony Tack?
If you are lucky, you might find everything you need at a local tack or feed store. The folks that run the store will be happy to answer all your questions about the tack they carry. If you need an item that they do not have in stock, they should be able to help you locate it.
You may find what you need in various catalogs and of course, there is the World Wide Web - the Internet. How did we ever get along without it? Regardless, of where you find the saddles, bridles and harness you want, you still need to know what size and type works best for you and your Mini, Pony, Horse or your mule or donkey. The Mini Horse and Pony Tack Guide will help you answer some of those questions you are searching for.

What size bridle, lead line , saddle etc. would I need for a pony about 40 inches. My grandson may be getting one today and I want to get him some tack. He actually has a saddle. He is 2 yrs old and rides pretty good. He loves all his horses but they are to big for him to lead around and that is what he wants to do, as well as goom feed etc. He is quite a Boy!!
Any info you could give would be great . Thank you so much, Maureen Caldarone a Proud Na-Na
Hi Maureen – a 40″ pony is a nice size for your grandson. Not too small that he would outgrow too quickly. Kids grow so fast. Since Ponies come in such a wide range of sizes, I like to use a bit-to-bit measurement to be sure of the fit. Measure from the corner of the pony’s mouth, up the cheek, over the poll, behind the ears, and down the opposite cheek to the mouth corner. Include a couple of inches for the bit rings or upper bit shank in your measurements. Times have changed and buying over the internet can be difficult with regard to sizing. Pony size, Cob Size, Horse size can cover a wide range. Using actual measurements will help you when you make a purchase. If you see an item you like, look for actual measurements. If you only see Pony size, then ask for the maximum and minimum bit to bit measurements. No sense in buying something that won’t fit.
I like to use game style reins with youngsters. Reins that are one single loop and that attach to the bit with scissor snaps. They are great as the child won’t drop one rein and when he wants to lead the pony, all he has to do is unsnap one of the reins and/or one rein end can be attached to the halter to be used as a lead.
You say you have a saddle for him. It is important that the saddle not only fit your grandson, but the pony as well. You want both of them to be comfortable. A saddle that fits a higher withered, slim build will probably not work on a broad flat back. Gullet size is important. Pony gullet sizes can vary between 4 inches for the more narrow frame to 6.5 inches for the broad, stout pony.
Hope this helps a little.
We have a 31″ high miniture and a 4 yr. old 35 lb. grand daughter (good little ridder). What size saddle for this size (medium size mini) would you reccomend. A 12″ just swallows him which is what our grandaughter has now for her larger pony. She’s the only person who’s been on him so I say she actually broke the mini herself bareback.
The average size four year old should be able to fit into a 10″ saddle. Look at the overall length of the saddle. We carry a 10″ saddle that is only 16.5″ from front to back which works well on the shorter backs. We also have a 12″ saddle that is 18.5″ from front to back. Measure your mini from the center of the withers to the point of hip to see how long you could go with a saddle. Hope this gives you some ideas.
I have a very petite mini mare that I would like to train to pull a cart. I am having trouble finding a bit small enough to fit her. (3 1/2 is too big) What can I do?
Hi Cathy – To be perfectly honest, I have never seen a bit smaller than the 3 1/2″ size. I just checked with some of my suppliers, and they don’t have anything smaller. My next thought is making or having made for you a hackamore or bitless bridle. A noseband that would apply pressure to the nose as opposed to a bit in the mouth. I don’t know of anyone who would or could make a metal bit. Another thought I have is taking a 3 1/2″ bit and add bit guards which would decrease the bit width. That is all I can think of that might work for you.
Hi! Swedish Globus sport has a lot of bits down to 85 mm, or about 3,3 inches. http://www.globussport.se/
I also would recomend a bit with no joints, as they are not as important that they fit perfectly, since no joint can pinch the corner of the mouth on them. I use 95 mm, or about 3,75 inches om my horses, wich are norwegian fjords, 14 hands tall. Most horses in general is using too big bits, so Globus sport is great for us that wants the horses to have a size of the bit that actually fits! I get goosebumps when i see the joints of the bits coming out of the horses corner of mouth… Ouch!!! (if you have problems buying from Globus, let me know, maybe i can help!)
